The Limb Center Process
Our 3-Phase process is carefully catered to your individual needs, maximizing your potential to achieve your goals.
Phase 1
Evaluation Process
The initial evaluation typically takes about 1 hour. At this time, you will have the opportunity to meet with the prosthetists to discuss your prosthetic needs and ask any questions you might have.
During this evaluation process, The Limb Center will:
- Get to know you and your specific lifestyle
- Examine your residual limb and current prosthesis
- Evaluate your mobility and prosthetic gait
- Identify concerns and discuss possible solutions
- Review your short term and long term goals
- Analyze your strengths and areas that may need attention
- Develop an individual treatment plan
- Begin tracking your progress
New Amputees
We work directly with you, your physician, your physical therapist, and other health care providers to design a personalized rehabilitation plan. Our top priority is to help you adjust to your new normal and to not feel alone. The Limb Center will support you along your limb loss journey so you can reach your specific goals. We want you to live your life to the fullest and to return to the hobbies and activities that you enjoy.
Experienced Amputees
Our team will evaluate your current prosthesis including your socket fit and prosthetic components. Together, we will discuss prosthetic options and available systems or equipment which may better suit your individual needs and help you return to living a full and active life.
Phase 2
Customizing Your Prosthesis
Fabrication
The Limb Center focuses on accuracy and comfort. This process begins with recording your individual limb dimensions and taking a precise plaster cast of your residual limb.
We then use these measurements and the mold to create a test socket. This clear prototype socket allows the clinician to visually inspect the socket fit and make any necessary adjustments. Our patients then walk on the test socket to ensure a proper fit and confirm the selected components are appropriate for you. Next, we fine tune the alignment to achieve the optimum prosthetic gait. Once the fit of the socket and the function of the components are acceptable, the socket is laminated and the fabrication of the prosthesis is completed.
The Right Socket For You
Our prosthetists take great care in modifying the mold to ensure a precise socket fit that meets the needs of our patients. The design of the socket and the specific suspension system used is carefully discussed with our patients so we can best meet their expectations.
For more information on socket solutions see our Technology page.
Phase 3
Continued Care
Your prosthesis over time will require occasional adjustments to maintain a proper fit. Life brings about change and any weight loss or gain can affect your prosthesis. An increase or decrease in your activity level can also affect how your prosthesis functions. Follow up appointments are critical to confirm your prosthesis continues to fit appropriately.
Our team will listen to your concerns and be here to provide prosthetic supplies such as liners, sleeves, socks, or shrinkers as they wear out. Periodic inspections of your prosthetic components and routine maintenance will ensure your prosthesis is functioning at maximum effectiveness. We are here For You. For Life.
Support Network
The Limb Center understands that one of the most important aspects of recovery is to have a strong support network. Adjusting to your new life with limb loss can be challenging even for the most resilient folks. No one can relate to that better than another amputee. We believe in creating a community of positive minded people who are here to support you when you need it. The Limb Center has a large network of long-time patients who are willing to offer peer support and talk with you during difficult times, as you adapt to your limb loss.
